Helsinki Finland – One day itinerary

My first major destination of 2019 was Finland and I am so glad I started new year by ticking this beautiful Scandinavian country off my bucket list. I started the Finland trip from the capital city Helsinki as the only way to get to Lapland is via Helsinki, so I planed to do overnight stay instead of just doing a flight connection. I arrived at Helsinki airport late in the evening around 6.00 p.m. and it was really cold and snowing heavily (-10 degrees), so decided to go to the hotel directly and prepare for the next day. In the morning after breakfast I explored the beautiful Helsinki in 7 hours and managed to see the colourful streets, some local caffe, market square and few famous Finnish architectures before heading to Lapland.

If you have 12 hours or a day to visit the Finnish Capital this One day Helsinki itinerary will help you plan your trip, as you will cover all the important landmarks as well as some hidden treasures. But before starting your day excursion don’t forget to grab your best comfortable pair of shoes and jackets depending on the month you visiting ( In my case it was winter boots and jacket as it was snowing throughout the day) and get ready to do a lot of walking,  yes It might sound crazy but you can cover almost all the famous spots just by walking, but don’t worry there will be an awesome coffee breaks too.

Remember Helsinki is not about sight seeing its about experiences and I highly recommend to put Helsinki on your list if visiting Finand in future.

Here are list of most photogenic and must visit places in Helsinki. Hope you enjoy as much I did exploring.XxHuvilakatu street: The first stop was most magical and Vibrant street of Helsinki. Literally you can’t skip the most colour full street of Helsinki off your list to do thing when in Finnish capital. I dint know helsinki is so vibrant until I visited the famous Huvilakatu street. The Huvilakatu which translates to “villa streets” is full of candy coloured houses and villas, each villa is of different colour and full of details. the street is short walk from the design museum and around 2 km from central railway station. when I was there street was empty and each candy colour houses were covered in thick snow which make the houses look really beautiful.Caffe carusel: After exploring Huvilakatu street was bit tired and cold as it was still snowing so I started looking some coffee shop near by and then after bit research on Google map I found caffe carusel just 600 meter away from Huvilakatu street, and oh boy definitely this was one pretty caffe. Caffe carusel is a local caffe and restaurant suitauted right by the sea near kaivopuisto park. cafe carrousel serves fresh pastries, delicious buffet lunch and a la carte. Caffe carusel is a hotspot during the summer for rich and famous coz of it’s picture perfect location. Try to stake out at window seat with the perfect view of half frozen sea.I was so glad to found this beautiful hidden spot.

Uspenski Cathedral: After quick coffee break I headed to the next spot, the famous and beautiful orthodox uspenski cathedral. This red brick cathedral with green dome with orthodox crosses will remind you of famous Russian architecture. Definitely must visit place specially in winter with thick layer of snow around made it look like fairytale castle, but no need to spend too much time wandering around the area , just take some beautiful pictures and move on to the next stop.

Market Square Helsinki: The famous outdoor market located right at the harbour is very close to Uspenski cathedral is most famous market of Helsinki. The market is full of food booth, live music and different vendor selling fresh finish food and souvenirs. At market square you can find many heated coffee tents and restaurants. I really got lucky to to visit the last day of famous Helsinki christmas market for an hour.

Helsinki cathedral: Helsinki cathedral is famous lutheran church located in senate square also know as most recognisable buildings in the city. In winter this white architecture was almost blending in to the thick snow. I dint visit the cathedral from inside just got some pictures from distant so if you have time don’t forget to checkout this beautiful architecture.Caffee Rigata: This adorable cabin turned caffe is another hotspot to sip your hot chocolate in cold and snowy day. Its picture perfect location and quaint charm makes it popular destination for local and tourist. Unfortunately when I arrived there it was close, so sad I couldn’t taste their famous hot chocolate and cinnamon role.  So If you are someone who’s in to the quaint and classy caffe don’t forget to add this in your itinerary.Sky wheel Helsinki: 40 m high sky observation wheel is one of Helsinkis top attraction. Although this is smaller than many other in the world but it gives a great panoramic view of the city and other major landmark. They also offered an VIP gondola and Sauna gondola experience with private champagne service. I booked a 20 minutes ride for 12 euros to soak in to the beautiful Scandenavian view before heading to the airport. For more details and to book ride online check their website Here.

Overall had an amazing cold and photogenic day in Helsinki, I am really sad that I wasn’t able to experience the famous Finnish sauna but definitely I am planing to come back soon, also I will be posting my lapland experience and more on Finland trip in my next blog post so don’t forget to subscribe and let me know if you need any more help in planing your trip to Helsinki.
