Seychelles – Not just a pretty seashore

With its breathtaking blend of white sandy beaches, majestic rain-forest, temperate weather and beautiful seascapes, the Seychelles is an island paradise for the sea lovers and thrill seekers who travels the globe in search of incomparable diving and sailing opportunities. For those who dream about relaxing and tranquility in luxury and comfort Seychelles provides the perfect setting for an exotic island retreat.

Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands located off the east coast of Africa in Indian ocean, is home to famous crystal clear beaches, coral reef , natural reserve and rare animals like the giant Aldabra tortoises. With more than 100 island, the majority of which are completely uninhabited, and the only 3 inhabited  islands being Mahé island, Praslin & La Digue. If you’re planning a trip to Seychelles, I highly recommend spending a few days exploring the 3 main islands (Mahé, Praslin & La Digue) as well as island hopping to some of the smaller and uninhabited islands.

Seychelles is more than just a honeymoon destination and there’s a lot to do in these beautiful islands, here are a list of some amazing experiences you can enjoy in Seychelles apart from relaxing in your favorite hotels or resorts.

Explore the Mahé Island: Mahé is largest and the most popular island where 90 % of Seychellois population (89,000) lives and also a famous touristic destination with a great variety of luxury resorts and beautiful hotels. With over 60 beautiful beaches and coves fringing the island, you could spend quite a long time just going from beach to beach. Aside from beach hopping, there’s a lot to do such as mountain climbing, hiking and chasing hidden waterfalls in the densely forested interior of Mahé island. If you’re someone who likes to mix your beach break with some adventure, rent a car because Mahé is a delight to drive around find your own corner of beach paradise.

I highly recommend to hire your own car to enjoy Mahé, whether for the whole or part of your trip, it will make life much easier and it’s a lot cheaper than taxis.

Visit the smallest capital in the world: Mahe island is also home to Victoria, Seychelles’ capital, known for Creole architecture and a colorful covered market with wares like fish, fruit and clothing. It is one of the smallest capitals in the world and you can find lots of interesting things from local souvenirs to creole food in addition to being the best spot for shopping on the island.

Stroll around the only man made island: Eden island is a man made island and home to a number of luxurious villas, sophisticated maisons and stylish apartments. The prime location of Eden island makes it an excellent starting point for any island excursion. From here you can take a private boat, ferry, or yachts to explore the other islands of Seychelles.

Take a Day trip to Praslin Island : Praslin is second largest island of Seychelles but its very small compare to Mahe island where only around  7000 Seychellois people lives. Praslin is famous for wild and palm fringed beaches, like Anse Georgette and Anse Lazio, both bordered by large granite boulders.  Praslin is also the only island where you can enjoy an 18 hole round of golf on a championship course, or discover the amazing Coco De Mer, an exotic plant that lead to the belief  the Seychelles were the true Garden of Eden. Praslin’s rough and jungle covered interior is also home to Unesco heritage ” Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve” which is part of Praslin national park. If you are looking for sightseeing , praslin might not be place for you. But beaches here are so gorgeous that you will have trouble leaving the place.

You can explore the Praslin island by boats , public buses and taxis ( Taxis are very expensive  – a one way ride costs almost same as hiring your own car for a day)

If you are flying to Seychelles with Etihad or Air Seychelles it is possible to include a flight to Praslin on your ticket but it will involve changing planes on Mahe.

Snorkeling in world famous beaches of La Digue: the smallest of 3 inhabited island  with population less than 3000 , La Digue is another picture perfect island that looks like a Hollywood movie set with its mixture of white sandy beaches and creole culture.  This is an extremely laid back place with some of the best iconic beaches in Seychelles. You can explore the island by foot or by bicycle, which takes around 10 minutes to cycle from one side o island to other side . You can visit La Digue for a day trip from Praslin or Mahe islands. Grande Anse, Petite Anse and the delightful Anse Cocos are famous beaches of La Digue.

Island hopping: The best way to discover Seychelles is island hopping,  and I am not talking about hopping the famous 3 islands. Visiting the remote and uninhabited islands to explore the wild beaches, unspoilt nature, eating fresh sea food straight out of the sea are some of the most authentic travel experience you can have in Seychelles. You don’t have to hire a private  yacht  in order to that, all you you need is small boats which carry around 5 to 20 people, and there are a lot of boating companies offering day trips to these islands.

Hikes on Copolia Trail and Morne Blanc: Seychelles are not just about crystal white sandy beaches, the inner part of Seychelles is made up of granite and a very unique location to explore. If you are someone who love outdoors and the mountains I highly recommend to hike up the beautiful Seychellois mountain.

Visit the National Botanical garden of Seychelles: Last But not least visit the national Botanical Garden located in Mont Fleuri, on the outskirts of Victoria. The famous Botanical Garden is one of Seychelles’ oldest National Monuments, dating back more than a century. It houses a wide collection of mature, exotic and endemic plants within five acres of landscaped and beautifully maintained tropical gardens. The Highlight and An added attraction of garden is the population of giant tortoises from Aldabra, some of which are over 150 years old.

How to get to SeychellesAir Seychelles the national airlines of the Republic of Seychelles since 1978, flies daily to Seychelles and neighboring islands from Abu Dhabi.  Air Seychelles also flies to Mauritius, Johannesburg, and Hong Kong.

Small enough for a romantic getaway yet diverse enough for the thrill seekers and water sports lovers, this beautiful jewel in the Indian Ocean will surely win you over with its natural beauty and its friendly locals, and I have no doubts that you will leave this wonderful place feeling extremely rejuvenated.
